Coach Vitello was an integral leader in Spartan sports, beginning his career when the school opened in 1968. Throughout his tenure, he taught biology and physical education and was the head coach for both soccer and baseball. In his 46 years at the helm, Vitello’s teams won five state championships and 33 district titles. Five of his players competed for the U.S. national team, including ’89 alum and former baseball major leaguer Bill Mueller, who is now the assistant hitting coach for the St. Louis Cardinals.
